1969 VW restoration in PA
I have been working on restoring my 1969 Volkswagen on and off for the past several years. It is nearly time to install the engine again but it has been sitting in the corner since removed quite some time ago. One very important thing to remember about an engine that has not been running for several years is that oil will gradually drain from the cylinders over time and if you just try and turn it over, you may cause damage due to the friction of unlubricated parts rubbing against each other. That is why whenever I have an engine project like this I will always remove the spark plugs and spray a little WD-40 into each of the cylinders. I will then slowly work the crank pulley back and forth with a wrench to make sure the engine is free and then slowly rotate the engine clockwise feeling for any unusual resistance. Re applying The WD-40 and starting the process again if need be. The WD-40 will penetrate between the piston and cylinder wall and provide a protective and slippery layer so that the components can move without damage until the gear driven oil pump inside the engine works the engine oil into place. I have re started and rescued many old engines in this way and it's all thanks to WD-40.
