1973 Ford Mustang Mach One Fire Restoration

Plus 50 more

This is my second restoration of this 1973 Ford Mustang Mach One. The picture shown of a clean complete car was the first restoration and what im trying to get the car back to. The car was involved in a storage unit fire where i was storing and working on the car. The fire was set by another tenant at the facility and it spread through the whole building eventually getting to my car. I moved storage units, got it running, and decided to move it to my sisters garage for safer keeping and a little better workspace. First thing first after getting it running was to strip it down to bare metal. After stripping it down, i pondered on what i wanted to turn it into this time since all of the original parts are now gone. I figured i would kind of modernize the car with a 12” digital dash from autometer, some nice TMI seats using the original seat frames, a one piece headliner (which i have yet to install) with starlights to go in place of the dome light. I ordered all of the parts and got those installed and put together before i decided i would learn to do my own bodywork this time around to save a bunch of money. I began on the passenger side because i figured it was the going to be the worst of it since it was closest to the fire and the wall had dented the quarter panel. After laying the filler and sanding i ran into an overheating problem and needed to address the whole cooling system, ordered new radiator, thermostat, waterpump and heater core. I will never know what the true problem was for the overheating because it all needed to go. Then back to sanding smooth on the passenger side and starting the driver side. It had a few waves so i heated up the metal and shrunk it with a cold rag to straighten it out a little bit. Worked very well. For the driver side i decided since i ran out of regular filler that i would do an experiment to see if fiberglass filler lasts longer over bare metal than the regular filler so the whole driver quarter is covered in fiberglass filler and smoothed over with a glaze. This is as far as i have gotten and will be spraying the car down with primer and paint shortly. Hopefully i can continue to add photos but if not no worries.
