My project is a 30x36 garage that I’m building. I am a total DIY type of person and I rather buy my own tools to get something done than pay for someone else to do it. That way I have the tools for the next time something needs fixed or built. That kind of preparedness also applies to having WD-40 on hand and ready to go. In my video I cover different situations that directly apply to building this garage.
The first repair involved a section of scaffolding with a sticking locking pin and latch that holds on the cross bars. The scaffolding is stored outside at my parents house. Dirt, corrosion, and exposure to the weather had caused the mechanism to bind. I applied WD-40 directly to the pin and pivot areas, allowed it to penetrate, and repeatedly worked the tab until it moved and locked properly again.
Next is my skid steer and the many things that can get difficult to use like the pins, hinges, latches, pivots, and roller components. On the fork attachment there are pins that need to be lifted to move the forks. In a case like this sometimes they seize and other times they are just hard to pull out. I applied WD-40 to the pins so the lubricant gets down where the pin slides. This keeps it moving freely and makes it easier to adjust the forks. As I move around I also notice the locking mechanism that keeps the skid steer attachments on. Newer skid steers have hydraulic or electric rams that move these latches, but mine is good old manual effort. The WD-40 that I spray is focused on the areas where a shaft is inside a boss and needs to either rotate or slide in and out. This makes pulling up the handles much easier. I also have the boom attachment I made just to lift the walls and trusses. This has some rollers from a pulley on the end. I spray the lubricant so it can penetrate down into the bearings and let the rollers work as they should.
The final repair was an adjustable ladder with stiff locking and hinge mechanisms. This is a mix of aluminum on aluminum and aluminum on steel. Both situations make it hard to operate if parts can't move freely. I applied WD-40 to the locking pins and moving joints, then operated the ladder several times to distribute the product and verify that the locks released and engaged correctly.
All three repairs followed the same idea: clean and free the existing mechanisms, restore their movement, and make the equipment usable again rather than throwing it away and purchasing replacements. Yes, I know you don’t just throw away a skid steer, but a cheap piece of scaffold and a ladder that is not friendly could find their way to the scrap yard very fast:)
