Fishing reel restorations
I’m a retired Machinery Mechanic , i worked in a very busy bottle manufacturing factory keeping the machinery running in an intense 24-7 operation ! After retirement I found I needed to keep moving . I tried fixing bikes then I bought an antique MGB , but I needed more , being an avid fisherman , I always maintained my equipment from tackle and fishing reels and even my boat and motor, I always used WD-40 it was a superior product when dealing with our machinery in the heat and moisture ( often parts were subject to temperatures as high 2100 degrees) . We used WD-40 to keep moisture out of finicky computer connections and dispelling moisture out of valves and solenoids! In my job I realized how well WD-40 broke down baked on oils and congealed greases , on machinery components. Also in my hobbies I used it to clean my fishing reels at the end of the season. I started to fix some of my older reels ( I’m 73 and had never thrown away a “good reel” ) I decided to work on them when I wasn’t fulfilling my home chores and honey-do list . (which seemed to grow daily)! I have moved into buying old discarded fishing reels and restoring them , WD-40 is my go to cleaner , it is almost the only product I use to remove dried grease and oils from reels that have been sitting for decades ! It is less corrosive than products designed to do the same job ! I know it won’t take chrome off obsolete parts like other products, and I use it with confidence, it also stops corrosion in its track! I buy WD-40!by the gallon and in the handy spray , I have it on my work bench and in my boat ,truck and tackle box ! In my 65 plus years I haven’t found a better product that does so many jobs satisfactorily! Here is one of my “projects” I have restored over 100 reels and I proudly display many right in my cabinet in the living room !
