Restoring 144 year old Cast Iron Garden Urns
Urns and bases had original paint along with rust, dirt and casting lines. Bases were broken at the corners along with old repairs that needed cleaning up. All was wire wheeled and/or sand blasted back to bare metal. Casting line ground off and needle scaler used to mimic cast iron look. Bases were welded back together where possible and holes filled and corners re-created with JB Weld.
Step 1
The bowl was bolted to the riser with 3 bolts with rusted heads which had to ground off to separate the two pieces. The bottom bolts of the handles were the size of toothpicks. They had to be ground off flush re-drilled and tapped. Wire wheel to base metal. Grind casting lines the needle scale to dimple.
Step 2
Cut apart 3 halves. Grind old repairs to a 45 degree. Wire wheel old rust and paint off. Sand blast decorative squares to get rust and paint off. Weld 4 sides together where possible(didn’t realize how much material was missing from previous repairs). All corners and holes filled with JB Weld then ground and dimpled with needle scaler.
