Restoring Grandpa’s Vintage Fishing Gear with WD-40

For this restore project, I’m breathing new life into my grandpa’s classic fishing setup: an old-fashioned tacklebox and a vintage fishing reel. Using WD-40’s versatile products, I’m transforming these weathered treasures into functional, gleaming pieces of angling history.

First, I tackled the rusty, creaky tacklebox. WD-40 Multi-Use Product Precision Pen was my go-to for loosening the stubborn hinges and latches. A quick brushing penetrated the rust, freeing up movement and restoring smooth operation For added protection, a light coat of WD-40 White Lithium Grease Product helped shield the metal from future corrosion, ensuring this tacklebox is ready to hold lures and memories for years to come.

Next, I turned to the fishing reel, which was seized up and caked with old grease. WD-40 Multi-Use spray hose feature and carefully removed built-up residue from the delicate components without harming the reel’s mechanics. Then, I applied WD-40 Multi-Use Product to lubricate the gears, restoring the reel’s silky-smooth cast and retrieve. The result? A vintage reel that performs like it did on its first trip to the lake.

This project showcases WD-40’s power to revive, protect, and preserve. My restored tacklebox and reel aren’t just functional—they’re a tribute to timeless fishing adventures, ready for their next chapter on the water.

Step 1: Lube the hinges with the precision pen

Make sure all the hinges are soaked with the precision pen, helping to provide precise, lubrication points.

Step 2: Lubricate the inner hinges with the precision pen to ensure a smooth opening and closing

Using the WD-40 precision pen, you can hit every pivot point on this complex tray mechanism. WD loosens the sticky mechanisms ensuring you can get to the proper lure fast enough to catch those fish.

Step 3: Old-fashioned reel maintenance

Using the two way WD-40 sprayer with the stream option, you can heavily dilute the old-school gears inside the reel, bringing it back to smooth operation and ensuring you will land to the big one

Step 4: White lithium grease for protection on the water

Final step is to apply protective white lithium grease specialist from WD-40 on all the previous hinges, giving you that final bit of confidence to make sure everything works while on your next fishing adventure.
Grandpa will be in the boat with me again thanks to WD 40s amazing line of products that help clean and protect sticky mechanisms.
