World's First Turbodiesel Plug-In Hybrid Tundra
This was a work truck for the previous owner, with over 300k miles, when he hit a cow on the highway. It destroyed the radiator which led to an over-heat and failing head gaskets. I bought it to give it new life as a diesel-hybrid work truck for myself. This is a two-stage project: Stage 1 - Install a hybrid transmission and supporting systems, with a moderate sized battery to make a short range battery-electric truck. Stage 2 - Install a small turbodiesel engine on the front of the hybrid transmission, then complete the necessary programming and testing to control the diesel engine to provide extra power and charge the battery. Stage 1 is complete, and the truck is able to drive under its own power. Power steering control and vacuum assisted brakes are in the works. I'm also sourcing a large enough battery to drive the truck 30-40 miles per charge, before stage 2 is completed. WD-40 helped me clean rust and remove rusted fasteners on the undercarriage, as I removed the entire 300k mile powertrain from this (American made) Tundra, to prepare for its new powertrain and second life with the best attributes of modern diesels and electric vehicles.
